Spin Cycle

I thought you might be interested in the press release sent to our department by CBC's head office. You'll see it below. I forgot to listen last Sunday, but hope to catch it this week. If any of you listened, and have comments, I'd love to hear them!

TODAY’S MEDIA: A FILTER OR A MOUTHPIECE FOR SPIN?

SPIN CYCLES EXAMINES THE WORLD OF PR AND THE PRESS
BEGINS SUNDAY, JAN. 21 ON CBC RADIO ONE

CBC Radio producer and author Ira Basen takes on the news media and the public relations industry in Spin Cycles: A Series About Spin, The Spinners And The Spun, a six-part series airing during the final hour of THE SUNDAY EDITION, beginning Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. on CBC Radio One. The series, produced and narrated by Basen, provides listeners with a rare look into the strategic orchestration that goes into many of the stories that make headlines.

As a veteran current affairs producer for CBC Radio, Basen grew frustrated with guests dodging questions and pushing key messages instead of directly answering questions. Basen sets out to better understand what drives the public relations industry, and tries to bridge the gap between journalists and PR practitioners.
Public relations is a robust vehicle for selling the public on everything from a war to a lifestyle. Spin Cycles explores a range of issues surrounding the PR industry, from its humble beginnings to the significant challenges this multi-billion dollar industry now presents to journalists.

A highlight in the series is Basen’s look at political spin. Through interviews with pioneers of modern day spin, including the communications consultants behind Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Canadian prime ministers from Lester Pearson to Paul Martin, Spin Cycles examines how these PR wizards concocted “leaks” to selective reporters, who then transformed their spin into “news”. The series then analyzes how effective reporters have been at cutting through this media manipulation.

In the widely publicized case of Maher Arar, some journalists uncritically reported politically motivated leaks from the RCMP. The leaks were designed to justify the RCMP’s treatment of Arar, but they had the effect of doing even more damage to Arar’s reputation. It is just one example of how spin doctors take advantage of the intensely competitive nature of the modern media. Reporters and editors want their “scoops”, even if it means becoming passive conduits for official spin.
“Spin itself is relatively benign. It becomes toxic when the press fails to do its job. I hope this series helps listeners take in the news with a more critical eye,” says Basen.

The program will also explore the future challenges for PR practitioners and journalists at a time of shrinking newsroom budgets, increased demand for content, and a PR industry that continues to grow in size and sophistication.
Spin Cycles airs from Jan. 21 to Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. (11:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

New Technology in the Workplace

Holy Cow, but I've opened a can of worms in my Employee Relations course! As you know if you read this blog, I've added to the course Second Life as a learning environment and as a to-be-critiqued employee communication tool. The students are having GREAT discussions about the value of Second Life in this course. I wish you were privvy to them but alas, they're private.

One student blog is public, however, and you might want to check it out:
http://laurenoostveen.blogspot.com (Jill, are you there? I'd like to link to your blog, too!)

I'd love to hear your thoughts, and pass them on to the students. What relevance do you see to having internal communication students exposed to new technologies in a classroom setting?

Habitat volunteer opportunity

I remember the first time I was invited to participate on a board committee. It was for Planned Parenthood in Grand Forks, ND and I was the youngest member at 21. I felt like a star and was so proud of the work we did. Sitting on not-for-profit boards of directors is still my favourite volunteer gig. You most often work with smart people who ask (and care) about your opinion. I feel as if I really am changing the world. Maybe this is something you'd like to consider. If so, check this out from one of my colleagues:

Hello faculty,

As a Habitat volunteer, I am forwarding an email I received from the office seeking volunteers for the organization's Public Relations Committee that I hope you will share with your students. This might be a great service-based learning opportunity to incorporate in your teaching, to frame an assignment, or 'tweak' someone's interest to become involved with Habitat on a more permanent basis. The website is http://www.habitathrm.com/ and the contact details are indicated below.

Leslie Earle and Megan Tompkins Share MSVU PR Co-op Student of the Year

this just out from the Co-op Office... Way to go, Leslie and Megan!

Each year deserving students are nominated by employers for the MSVU Co-op Student of the Year Awards. We are pleased that so many employers invested the time in recognizing students' contributions to their organizations. The employer nominations and students' personal statements are very rewarding to read.

The selection committee had the difficult task of choosing one student from each discipline to be named MSVU Co-op Student of the Year (2006). For the first time ever, two students will share the honor of receiving the MSVU Co-op Student of the Year Award for one discipline. The selection criteria included academic achievement, community involvement contribution to employer, and the impact co-op has had on personal and professional development.

The 2006 recipients are:

Ahmed Dalloul (Business Administration), nominated by Scotiabank, in Halifax, NS;

Jianghong (Sunny) Zhang (Information Technology), nominated by the MSVU Research and International Office, in Halifax, NS;

Leslie Earle (Public Relations), nominated by the Centre for Women in Business, in Halifax, NS;

Megan Tompkins (Public Relations), nominated by Skills Canada - Nova Scotia, in Halifax, NS; and

Claire Sullivan (Tourism & Hospitality Management), nominated by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Culture, in St. John's, NL.

Chris Felix (Information Technology) received honorable mention and was nominated by the Nova Scotia Department of Finance, in Halifax, NS.

The selection committee was comprised of the Director of Co-operative Education, Dr. Mary Lyon; the academic Chairs, Professor Paula Crouse, Professor Ann MacGillivary and Dr. Marie Riley; the Manager of Co-operative Education, Sonya Horsburgh; and the Co-operative Education Coordinators, Scott Daniels, Mausi Reinbold and Kirsten Somers.

These nominations are just one more example of how "MSVU Co-op Students Work!". Congratulations!

Yours truly,

The MSVU Co-op Team

MSVU PR Professors Use Blogs in Teaching

There are a multitude of reasons why I love my job at MSVU. One of them is the people I work with; most are intelligent, kind and brave. Most are brilliant teachers. Second Life

I thought you might be interested in knowing what's going on here in PR at MSVU. This is from Insight, MSVU's internal newsletter...

Professional Communication in Second Life

Educators and business leaders are racing to develop a presence in Second Life (http://secondlife.com/), a 3-D massively multiplayer online gaming environment, because of the opportunities presented for creativity and effective communication. Universities have set up virtual campuses, companies are designing and marketing products and services, and over one million people have logged on for a variety of social, educational and commercial reasons.

During the winter term, MSVU is taking small steps to investigate the potential of this online world as a learning platform, by creating a pilot program as part of Employee Relations PBRL 4101, a Public Relations course taught by Dr. DeNel Rehberg Sedo. The module will be created and delivered by Dr. Rehberg Sedo, with pedagogical and technical assistance from Extended Services Librarian Denyse Rodrigues and additional research support from University Librarian Donna Bourne-Tyson. Learning outcomes will include:

-a heightened awareness of the potential of a virtual online environment for effective internal business communication
-a mastery of basic “in-world” skills in Second Life
-a set of assessment skills necessary to analyze and critique the value proposition for professional communication inherent in a gaming environment.

In a future post, I'll provide blog links to Brent King and Barbara Emodi's teaching blogs.

over for now, doctor d
