Manager, Corporate Sponsorship and Institutional Giving
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1919 in one of North America’s most beautiful cities, the Vancouver Symphony is the third largest symphony orchestra in Canada, with an annual operating budget of over $10 million. The Orchestra performs 140 concerts annually in some fourteen series in its home, the Orpheum Theatre, and numerous venues throughout Lower Mainland British Columbia. In addition, it can be heard regularly across Canada and the northern United States on CBC Radio broadcasts. Bramwell Tovey is the Music Director.


Specific Responsibilities:

Plans, directs and leads the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s corporate solicitation activities. Maintains strong working relationships with board members, volunteer leadership, and members of the corporate community to maximize corporate support and sponsorships. Reports to the Chief Development Officer.

Develops a comprehensive plan for annual support, identifying and targeting a wide range of corporate prospects
Secures dialog and meetings with prospective sponsors and donors
Implements an organized and thorough solicitation of all prospects utilizing volunteer leadership where appropriate
Motivates and prepares volunteer solicitors for successful solicitations.
Makes presentations to potential sponsors and develops proposals to secure funding
Successfully closes revenue generating sponsorships
Cultivates effective relationships between corporate representatives and VSO leadership and programs
Oversees the implementation and fulfillment of dynamic recognition and sponsorship packages for corporate donors providing all levels of support
Coordinates and attends sponsor events (e.g. post-concert corporate donor receptions)
Monitors sponsorships to ensure benefits are met and sponsors are regularly updated
Manages day-to-day execution of the corporate giving program and facilitates the renewal process
Schedules and manages committee meetings and follow-up assignments
Maintains accuracy of tracking systems for all solicitation and follow-up
Ensures accuracy of corporate pledges and all pledge-related correspondence, including invoicing
Responds to inquiries regarding particular funding opportunities and challenges
Determines goals and budgets. Tracks and reports on same
Participates in department-wide activities such as cultivation and fundraising events
Performs other duties as assigned
Position Qualifications:
Minimum of five years fundraising experience required. Candidate should have an excellent track record in face-to-face relationship building, soliciting and closing gifts with a history of solid fundraising results. Demonstrated history of strong corporate fundraising results. Demonstrated knowledge of corporations. Direct knowledge of corporate fundraising practices, trends and initiatives, particularly in the Lower Mainland. Must have a thorough knowledge of fundraising principles, and strong interpersonal and organization skills, knowledge of a donor database preferred. Must be able to implement, organize, and prioritize multiple projects to meet deadlines. Must have the abil! ity to work well with staff members, board members, volunteers and donors. Proven ability to set and accomplish goals/objectives and establish priorities with minimal direction while working well in a team environment. Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends, as required. Comparable professional experience could include business development, corporate marketing, or public relations. Excellent communications skills, both written and oral are required. Outstanding relationship management skills are essential. Must be able to operate in a network PC environment and have a detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office. Valid driver’s license and access to vehicle required.
