We are also looking for communications, PR, and HR professionals to join a panel of judges.

The competition : Judging will take place at MSVU. During a 10 minute presentation, students present their portfolio to the panel of three judges.

Job Summary
GPI Atlantic is seeking a researcher to work on the completion of our headline indicators report. This project is a product of the ten years of research work that GPI Atlantic has completed to date. The headline indicators from each subject area have already been selected, and considerable data collection has already been undertaken. The researcher will be responsible for collecting new and updated data for the key headline indicators (focusing first on the environmental and natural resource indicators), organizing the data in spreadsheets for incorporation into the GPI database, reviewing the original analysis contained in each report, and then reporting on new trends and changes in the data since the last report was issued.

National Co-operative Education Week is March 19 - 23, 2007. The MSVU Co-operative Education Office invites you to help us celebrate 50 years of Co-operative Education in Canada .

On Wednesday, March 21st from 2-3 pm , the Co-op Office will be hosting an Open House for students and faculty in Seton Annex 3 . Please drop by for cake and the opportunity to win a basket full of goodies donated by Harbinger Communications Inc.

Of course, if you cannot make it to our Open House, please drop by during the week to fill out a ballot. The draw will take place on Friday, March 23rd at 3 pm and you may only enter the draw once.

Also, we thought a little history lesson was warranted for such an occasion:

HISTORY OF CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION IN CANADA
In the mid 1950's admissions to post-secondary academic institutions in Canada started to grow at a rapid rate. The technology revolution was underway. The community of Kitchener-Waterloo in Ontario, 65 miles west of Toronto, was a diverse manufacturing, business and insurance community.

A number of individuals had a vision that a technologically oriented university was needed. Many of these people had been transferred from head offices to subsidiary companies in the area and were familiar with co-operative education practiced in the United States.

The group decided to find an institution with an engineering program based on the concept of co-operative education. Once the decision was made, little time was wasted and by July 1957, 75 co-op students were admitted to a new institution which would later become the University of Waterloo.

They were told the economy would not support such a venture and that co-operative education would not work. Meanwhile, employers of co-op students judged co-op programs to be a success. Students were well received and given practical and challenging learning situations during their work terms. Supervisors of students became aware they had a unique opportunity to be a part of the educational process and that they were supporting future leaders of Canadian industry and business.

Today, support for co-operative education among employers is found in all sectors of the economy. Approximately 75% of all co-op terms are in the private sector with the remainder represented by federal, provincial and municipal governments as well as various government and social service agencies.

Perhaps it is easiest to think of our service as the reinvention of a travel guide like Lonely Planet, employing all of the latest technologies and techniques of the internet (aka Web 2.0). Social media, social networks, geotagging, wikies, etc.

There are all kinds of ways that I could work with PR grads, students, etc. that range from co-op positions, to long term gigs to volunteer/term projects.

Right now I am looking for a Manager of Content & Community, a very senior marketing exec and some folks on the technology side.

ORGANIZATION

The Ecology Action Centre, established in 1971, is Nova Scotia's largest and
most active environmental organization. We work on sustainable
transportation, marine and coastal issues, wilderness issues, urban issues,
sustainable food production and alternative energy.

A program of the Transportation Issues Committee, Active & Safe Routes to
School promotes walking, cycling or using other forms of active
transportation for the trip to school and to other destinations in the
community.

The Community Advisor works directly with schools to provide support in
their Active & Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) projects. The Community Advisor
will specifically promote the Neighbourhood Pace Car program, a partnership
of ASRTS and Canada's home, car and business insurers. It aims to reduce car
speeds in school communities and increase safety for students and other
residents who walk and wheel.

RESPONSIBILITIES

-Participate in and support the overall work of the Ecology Action
Centre
-Assist in launching the Pace Car program provincially and promote
it on an ongoing basis
-Produce communications materials
-Recruit schools/communities across the province to participate in
the Pace Car program
-Provide support to school and community groups in implementing the

Nova Scotia Archives Needs a Volunteer

"Introducing Archives" Travelling Exhibit

The Council of Nova Scotia Archives (CNSA) is a non-profit, professional organization for archives and archivists in Nova Scotia. Founded in 1982 by a core group of twenty-five institutions, organizations and individuals the CNSA has quadrupled its membership in the last twenty-five years and now represents over one hundred community archives and museums, university and religious archives, the provincial archives, heritage associations, corporations and individuals. The Education, Outreach, and Network Archivist (EONA) is the lone professional archivist who facilitates the Council's educational programs, maintains on-line databases and travels to member institutions to provide on-site assistance. Dedicated professional archivists, drawn from member institutions, volunteer their time on various administrative committees to foster education of archival standards and practices within Nova Scotia's archival community, and the CNSA endeavors to promote archival standards, procedures and practices among those institutions and organizations entrusted with the care of Nova Scotia's documentary heritage.

The CNSA is seeking to create a travelling exhibit to be used for professional and public gatherings, such as the upcoming Archives & You! Conference (to be held in Halifax on May 11 & 12, 2007) and heritage promotion events such as Mi'kmaq History Month or African Heritage Month, over the next five to seven years. The travelling exhibit would take the form of a tri-fold or quadra-fold upright display in either table-top or freestanding format. The travelling exhibit would serve to communicate the role of archives and the nature of archival holdings to the general public, as well as facilitating an introduction to Nova Scotia's archival institutions and the CNSA at discipline-related professional conferences. Our hope is that this exhibit will foster an understanding and appreciation for archives in general while also promoting the work of the CNSA.

Depending on the display board purchased, the contents of the exhibit could be divided into three or four distinct sections: an overview of the CNSA (its mandate, members, role and geographic responsibility); an overview of archives (an accessible definition of "archives", examples of how archives can be used (and by whom), and examples of the various media types of archival records (i.e. motion picture film, sound recordings, photographs, textual (written) documents, etc); examples of archival records (as indicated above, but uniform in size and including colour images / text where possible, with appropriate contextual information for each item on display); and genealogical or other records (this section could be used to focus promotion to tailored / specific audiences). The intended (broad) audience is men and women in the general public between the ages of twenty-five to one hundred; a more focused audience would be conference attendees at related information management professional events.

Before Canadians can use their archival heritage, they must be aware of what is available and feel welcome to use it. The travelling exhibit must convey a positive, trustworthy and accessible image of archives and should allow the CNSA to take advantage of promotional opportunities as they arise. Since the CNSA would like to have the exhibit ready for the Archives & You Conference on May 11 & 12, 2007, we suggest the following timetable would be sufficient for collecting archival materials from our partner institutions necessary for the display as well as the design period.

Beginning March 1, 2007:
Week 1 - consult with graphic designer about potential display concepts
Weeks 2-4 - collect documents, images, audio recordings, etc. from NS member archives
Weeks 4-5 - reproduce/reformat for exhibit readiness all material collected; send to designer
Weeks 4-5 - meet with designer(s), discuss layout, text, colours, flow; review mockups; choose final
Weeks 4-5 - designer prints work
Week 6 - assemble display

As indicated earlier, the CNSA is a non-profit organization and we would be unable to pay a student(s) for working on this project, however, it might be possible to provide a small materials budget.

Hello Mount Folks!

Heather MacAulay (BPR'87) here! After more than 20 years working in the field of mass communications,
I'm now working in the field of Renewable Energy, but combining the two
on several exciting community based projects.

The most pressing is a Canada-Cuba initiative which will double the meager amount of
electricity available to a small Cuban town.
Increasing the 4 hours of available electricity(if lucky)to 8
hours daily, will bring great improvements to hospital operations,
schools, businesses and households.

The vehicle we've decided to use in fund raising is part of the new
"directed charitable giving" wave. The site - *givemeaning.com* offers
a platform for smaller causes that don't have access to the fund raising
machine available to the larger charities. Additional details on the

Once we get the project off the ground, I will work with my husband's
production company, Water Street West Entertainment, to produce a video
documenting the challenges and accomplishments along the way. This
video will form part of an education module, showing other communities

production side of this is totally separate and not financially tied to
the energy project.

... There are several aspects of
this initiative which may be applicable to alumni working throughout the
world. I hope that you might be able to help spread the word - individually or

Melinda Miller begins UN post

One of our fantastic undergraduates, Melinda Miller, is set to begin an internship with the UN on Monday. She's already in Vienna as an exchange student and is just the sort who couldn't be satisfied with only that one experience. (Just teasing, Melinda. I'm very proud of you!)

Melinda will work with them between 1 March - 30 April 2007 in the Advocacy Section of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. There, she will be promoting the work of UNODC worldwide through information, education and public awareness campaigns. The unit also manages the organization's public website (www.unodc.org), produces the quarterly magazine Perspectives, produces the Annual Report and performs other public information-related tasks.

External Relations exists to support the strategic priorities of Dalhousie University. This is achieved by fostering an environment for alumni and friends that will encourage and enable them to volunteer for the University throughout all levels of the organization and to raise money to support Dalhousie's strategic initiatives. Reporting to the Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, the Alumni Officer has an overall responsibility for the organization, planning and execution of a wide variety of programs that support a comprehensive Alumni and External Relations program.

Major Responsibilities:

Develop and deliver alumni programs that encourage and foster relationships with nearly 90,000 Dalhousie alumni.

Statement of Responsibility:

Event Management:

Estimated percent of time: 30%

Representative Duties:

Plan, organize and execute events that include dinners (for up to 500 people), receptions, donor recognition activities, golf tournaments, awards banquets, etc. Each year, alumni officers organize thirty to forty events. While some events are held in Halifax, most are held in cities across Canada, the United States and outside of North America.
Provide leadership and advice in planning events, including all components of special event management from room bookings, menu selection, contractual commitments, follow-up and appropriate thank you's post-event.
Secure event sponsorship and ticket revenue for various events.
Manage budgets pertaining to specific events. Total budget for event management is $120,000.
Manage data requests, refine lists for mailing and volunteers, and ensure updates are made on Banner.
Analysis (qualitative and quantitative) and evaluation of event demographics and attendance.
Work with Associate Director of Donor Relations on developing strategy and implementing it as it pertains to donor recognition events.

Volunteer Management Estimated percent of time: 15%

Representative Duties:

On behalf of External Relations, design and develop a volunteer management plan.
Engage alumni volunteers locally, nationally and internationally to work with and on behalf of Alumni Relations. As many as 50 volunteers are managed each year. This often includes very senior alumni who are in an position to be influential and generous.
This includes identification, recruitment, training, planning, managing, providing feedback, rewarding and referring good volunteers to other institutional leaders.
Examples of volunteer leadership include reunion leaders, chapter/regional leaders, student volunteers, etc., all of whom are significant community leaders.

Communications/Marketing: Estimated percent of time: 30%

Representative Duties:

Ensure success of revenue generating projects, including event ticket sales, event sponsorship, etc.
Develop and manage programs to generate revenue on behalf of the department.
Handle cash and credit card sales of approximately $100,000 over the course of a year.
Work with Dalhousie and external technical teams to develop videos and other audiovisual presentations. This includes everything from concept development, interviews, working with the camera team, editing, etc.

Research/Evaluation: Estimated percent of time: 25%

Representative Duties:

Design and conduct surveys to determine event success and identify means for continuous improvement.
Work closely with Annual Giving to determine the relationship between event participation and financial support of the university.
Research through networking with colleagues in other institutions, locally and throughout North America, to generate new ideas pertaining to event management and evaluation, communications, etc.
Research, analyze and manage new program development, including a new student and a new seniors program.

Freedom to Act

Acts autonomously and reports in a team environment. Consults with director and colleagues on various matters as appropriate. This would include any significant departures from the departmental strategy and brand new initiatives.

Effect of Error

Any errors could result in lost income to the faculty and/or institutions, missed opportunities, disenfranchised alumni and/or damage to the institution's reputation. Errors in communications, volunteer and event management can be detrimental to initiatives of other External Relations units, and the entire institution. Dealing with confidential and sensitive personal information, relating to alumni and donors requires absolute accuracy and confidentiality.

Contribution to Decision Making

Makes decisions daily that contributes to achieving results. Consults, strategizes and recommends changes to courses of actions.

Job Specifications

Education:

Undergraduate degree, preferably in Management or Public Relations.

Experience:

No less than five years experience.

Supplemental Study:

Knowledge of university policies and procedures, trends in alumni relations, fundraising, communications and marketing. This is achieved by taking formal courses related to university advancement, keeping abreast of best practices at leading Canadian institutions, etc.

Internal: Colleagues, Directors, administrative staff within the university.
External: Alumni, friends and corporate representatives. Suppliers, including designers, photographers, printers, mailing houses, volunteers. Many of the contacts of the Alumni Officer interacts with are very influential people who give generously of their time and money. They also are in a position to influence others. These can include leaders of some of Canada's most significant companies and members of some of Nova Scotia's leading families. Recently, a senator and a member of the Irving family hosted events on behalf of Dalhousie. Alumni officers work closely with these individuals and must establish and maintain a professional image on behalf of the university.

The current annual

salary would be approximately $40,000.

Required Education and Experience

Summary Description:

12. Participate with the Campaigns Director and
Campaigners in the development of campaign strategies

13. Act as watchdog on current media issues relevant to
campaign communications strategies. Develop and
implement methods of measuring the success of
Greenpeace Canada's media activities.

14. Provide expert advice to the campaigns staff,
Campaigns Director, Executive Director on the handling of
media issues, and conduct media training to all Greenpeace
Canada spokespersons and any staff who must deal with

15. Provide advice and assistance on organizational profile
and on the forwarding of the profile of the Executive

The series, produced and narrated by Basen, provides listeners with a rare look into the strategic orchestration that goes into many of the stories that make headlines.

As a veteran current affairs producer for CBC Radio, Basen grew frustrated with guests dodging questions and pushing key messages instead of directly answering questions. Basen sets out to better understand what drives the public relations industry, and tries to bridge the gap between journalists and PR practitioners.
Public relations is a robust vehicle for selling the public on everything from a war to a lifestyle. Spin Cycles explores a range of issues surrounding the PR industry, from its humble beginnings to the significant challenges this multi-billion dollar industry now presents to journalists.

A highlight in the series is Basen’s look at political spin. Through interviews with pioneers of modern day spin, including the communications consultants behind Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Canadian prime ministers from Lester Pearson to Paul Martin, Spin Cycles examines how these PR wizards concocted “leaks” to selective reporters, who then transformed their spin into “news”. The series then analyzes how effective reporters have been at cutting through this media manipulation.

In the widely publicized case of Maher Arar, some journalists uncritically reported politically motivated leaks from the RCMP. The leaks were designed to justify the RCMP’s treatment of Arar, but they had the effect of doing even more damage to Arar’s reputation. It is just one example of how spin doctors take advantage of the intensely competitive nature of the modern media. Reporters and editors want their “scoops”, even if it means becoming passive conduits for official spin.
“Spin itself is relatively benign. It becomes toxic when the press fails to do its job. I hope this series helps listeners take in the news with a more critical eye,” says Basen.

The program will also explore the future challenges for PR practitioners and journalists at a time of shrinking newsroom budgets, increased demand for content, and a PR industry that continues to grow in size and sophistication.

Each year deserving students are nominated by employers for the MSVU Co-op Student of the Year Awards. We are pleased that so many employers invested the time in recognizing students' contributions to their organizations. For the first time ever, two students will share the honor of receiving the MSVU Co-op Student of the Year Award for one discipline. Professional Communication in Second Life

Educators and business leaders are racing to develop a presence in Second Life (http://secondlife.com/), a 3-D massively multiplayer online gaming environment, because of the opportunities presented for creativity and effective communication. Universities have set up virtual campuses, companies are designing and marketing products and services, and over one million people have logged on for a variety of social, educational and commercial reasons.

During the winter term, MSVU is taking small steps to investigate the potential of this online world as a learning platform, by creating a pilot program as part of Employee Relations PBRL 4101, a Public Relations course taught by Dr. DeNel Rehberg Sedo. The module will be created and delivered by Dr. Rehberg Sedo, with pedagogical and technical assistance from Extended Services Librarian Denyse Rodrigues and additional research support from University Librarian Donna Bourne-Tyson. Learning outcomes will include:

-a heightened awareness of the potential of a virtual online environment for effective internal business communication
-a mastery of basic “in-world” skills in Second Life
-a set of assessment skills necessary to analyze and critique the value proposition for professional communication inherent in a gaming environment.

2010 Legacies Now is a not-for-profit society that works in partnership with community organizations, non-government organizations (NGOs), the private sector and all levels of government to develop sustainable legacies in sport & recreation, arts, literacy, and volunteerism. 2010 Legacies Now actively assists communities discover and create unique and inclusive social and economic opportunities leading up to, during and beyond the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Once again, we are delighted to open our summer 4-week London Seminar in
International Public Relations to public relations students at the great
schools associated with AEJMC's PR Division. I will be leading the 2007
seminar, scheduled from May 17-June 8 at Regent's College in London and
ask that you convey this opportunity to your students. The 3-credit
course is open to undergraduate and graduate students who have completed
at least the public relations principles course. This course aims to
acquaint the student -- whether an undergraduate pre-professional, a
graduate student with practical public relations experience, or someone
from outside the profession -- with the complexities of public relations
practice in an international setting. We begin by laying the
theoretical foundation for comparative analysis of public relations
practice around the world, then examine specific national and regional
examples. Edward T. Hall said, "Culture is communication and
communication is culture." Public relations, in turn, is based upon
communication between an organization and its relevant constituencies.
Relations with those constituencies are complicated by social, cultural,
economic and other contexts that affect the ability to encode and decode
messages. Understanding those contexts in both abstract and concrete
fashions will permit more effective two-way symmetric communication
that, in turn, benefits all concerned. Principles learned in this
course will aid in improving international and cross-cultural public
relations practice and contribute to success in any profession.

There is no distinction in cost between graduate and undergraduate, nor
between in-state and out-of-state students for this course. The class
meets Monday-Thursday from 1-4 p.m., so there is ample opportunity for
exploring London and beyond. Emphasis is placed on experiential
learning to take advantage of the professional public relations
opportunities in London.

Background

In 1996, Jesus Tecu Osorio founded the Fundacion Nueva
Esperanza (FNE) with the funds he received from the
Reebok Human Rights Award. It offered educational
support (scholarships, computer training and tutoring) to
Maya-Achi youth whose parents were victims or survivors
of the 1980s genocide, thus contributing to the construction
of a just and democratic state. In 2003 they opened the New
Hope Secondary School to offer educational opportunities
for youth affected by the violence and to facilitate
occupational, personal, social, and cultural programs
designed to overcome causes and effects of the violence.

Through contacts made by a 2001-02 Intern with the FNE,
we developed a 2002-03 Internship, followed by Intern
placements in 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06. These
Internships have been excellent placements, from the
perspectives of the Intens and the FNE, and the 2006-07
intern will be arriving in Guatemala at the end of October
2006. We also send annual human rights delegations to
visit the Fundacion and have sent two carpentry teams to
the FNE to work WITH (RATHER THAN FOR!) the
parents and students in the construction of FNE's first
school buildings. The Fundacion Director traveled
throughout the Maritimes in 2003 and 2004, creating
significant relationships as he shared the FNE's experience
in high schools and universities and fund-raised for the
school.

The FNE is in its sixth year of hosting IYIP interns, all of
whom have received excellent supervision from the FNE
Director, Guillermo Chen. The FNE also hosts, on a regular
basis, International cooperants and volunteers.

Work placement responsibilities

In collaboration with the Bufete Juridical Popular board
and staff, the Intern will:

* Support the innovative efforts of the FNE to further
develop an ongoing professional development program
offered for teachers at the FNE's Community Institute, a
Maya-Achi inter-cultural school, through the design and
implementation of workshops to help teachers to improve
their teaching, using creative and participatory educational
methodologies

* Be an integral part of a development team that makes
linkages between the Community Institute and the FNE
and the wider Rabinal community, by creating and
implementing a strategy for community engagement,
cross-cultural learning and exchange.

2. INTERNSHIP TITLE: Gender & Community
Development Adviser, Bufete Jurídico Popular de Rabinal
(Rabinal Community Legal Aid Office)

Background:

The Bufete's original, legal, objective is the fulfillment of
the 1996 Peace Accords by facilitating access by victims of
genocide and crimes against humanity to the legal system
and the National Restitution Commission. Because of its
awareness of family violence and the lack of response to
this issue in the legal system and the community, the
Bufete is also responding to issues of family violence,
and the lack of response to this issue in the community
and the legal system.

Tatamagouche Centre has had a relationship with Jesus
Tecu and the Bufete Juridical Popular since 2000. We sent
our first Intern to the Bufete Juridical in 2001-02, and have
since placed a retired lawyer and a law student to work
with them. They recently renewed their request for an
Intern.

The Intern and professional volunteers placed with the
Bufete Juridical Popular have had excellent experiences.
The Coordinator and staff lawyer are highly committed to
and capable of offering an Intern with a satisfying, well-
supervised experience. In 2006-2007, an intern will begin a
placement with the Bufete Juridico Popular de Rabinal as a
Human Rights Adviser.

Work Placement Responsibilities:

In collaboration with the Bufete Juridical Popular board
and staff, the Intern will:

* Carry out training workshops, awareness raising activities
and research that will enable Maya-Achi women and their
community organizations, to gain a deeper understanding
of gender issues, which will particularly enable them to
more fully participate in municipal and departamental
development councils and judicial institutions.

* Develop and implement family violence and sensitization
workshops, and support women who come to the Bufete
Juridico Popular with such cases

3. INTERNSHIP TITLE: Gender and Sexuality
Educator, Nuevos Horizontes

Background:

Nuevos Horizontes, a non-profit organization based in
Quetzaltenango, supports women and children in situations
of need. It offers a unique combination of services that
include: a shelter and family support for abused women and
children and those in situations of social risk, legal
accompaniment and support, childcare centers, community
education in the topics of human rights, gender, self-
esteem, and sexuality, a medical clinic and psychological
therapy, and training centers for women.

The Guatemala Breaking the Silence program of
Tatamagouche Centre has had a relationship with Nuevos
Horizontes since 2002, when we placed our first CIDA
Intern there. In 2002-03, we placed a second Intern there.
In 2004-05 and 2005-06, we placed volunteers with Nuevos
Horizontes for six months. Tatamagouche Centre has been
pleased with the supervision and work experiences of
previous Interns and volunteers placed with Nuevos
Horizontes.

Work Placement Responsibilities:

The Intern will work with the community education unit of
Nuevos Horizontes, with a particular focus on gender and
sexuality education with elementary, junior high, high
school students, and women's groups. Themes for
workshops and presentations may include gender justice,
sexuality, self-esteem, HIV/AIDS, violence, women's
rights, and women's integral health education (physical,
mental, social and reproductive health).

The Intern will, with Guatemalan counterparts to support
instutional and program objectives by means of :

* Designing and implementing workshops (including
relevant material such as visual aids), on themes such as
gender justice, sexuality, self-esteem, HIV/AIDS, women's
rights, violence and women's integral health education
(physical, mental, social and reproductive health).

* Participate as a tutor in literacy classes for women.

* Support the process for financial sustainability and
organizational development

JOB SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

o Participate in the operation of our pilot Biodiesel facility
at UBC which will include the following: testing waste
vegetable oil, assisting with the running of the plant,
cleaning and maintenance, as well as reporting functions;
o Assist in the training of interested Biodiesel operators
across BC which will include helping to develop a training
curriculum;
o Assist in the assembly of the portable Biodiesel system;
o Conduct research to build a library of information related
to Biodiesel;
o Maintain the Biodiesel website including adding content
and information specific to Biodiesel when requested by
clients; and
o Add results of your work to project website (5% of time
max on web maintenance).

Statement of Qualifications

The candidate should have an environmental, economics,
business, science or applied science background. The
candidate should be able to write technical reports, be
numerate and use excel, and understand basic business
processes. The candidate must be computer literate and
able to communicate effectively with clients and other
sensitive project contacts.
